More news in November: Anteeksi organized 4th Fäsäri, this time on ice. Tuomas made these "Taloset", a moving neighborhood. Check here for more pictures.
While Tuomas was skating, Johanna was setting up temporary office in Sunu Kër, Senegal for four weeks. More info here.
Hello! Scroll down for some excuses for not updating for a loong time but first read this:

We have opened up M41LH2 / Central Europe -office in Zürich. Since Tommi is spending a big share of his time in Zürich due to teaching at the ETHZ, we have decided to establish a partner office there to be able to work geographically closer to projects in Central Europe. Architect-urbanist Mirjam Niemeyer is joining forces with us in this operation – welcome Mirjam!

In 2007 we continue to operate this way, working both individually and as a whole group.

To start with there are two projects under work already in the Zürich office: a site development project in the historical center of Grevenbroich, Germany. The project is in a very early stage of defining the interests of the main stakeholders and studying possible future scenarios.

Another one is a domestic stadiumlamp called 'Letzi-lampe' on which Tommi is collaborating with his colleague Thomas Kovari from ETH. The first prototype was already successfully exhibited in April in the 'Trend Boulevard'-happening in Zürich .

Tuomas spent the autumn on academic work. He was working on his thesis project (picture), tutored by Antti-Matti Siikala, during autumn and graduated finally, so now the whole partner team of M41LH2 are qualified architects.

Studio Widnäs
in which Tuomas and Johanna were working as project architects got Woodprize -honorary mention. Nice!

Tuomas and Johanna submitted an entry with architect Henrik Ahola (sleeping in Skogskyrkogården) for the Asplund library competition.

Johannas Lightcarpet keeps on getting interest, it has been published by VVORK and MocoLoco for example, and exhibited in Norway. Also Johannas design for Kuurna was noticed in Food&Wine.

She has also been involved in art projects, in Arabianranta
and for landscape architect Gretel Hemgård.
Tommi on our Pori house building site in August.

He also wrote some articles: 'No Slush' looks at the development
potentials of center of Helsinki and it was published in 'Monu - Magazine on
urbanism'
. The magazine is new on the field and fresh.

Helsinki Design Week asked Tommi to write about cities and creativity. The provocative article 'City as a loft with safe
insecurity
' is somehow tackling the given topic.

And now the excuses_a belated report May to August 2006:

We spent lot of time working on exhibitions: with Anteeksi on Forest and Remix (upper photo) in Fiskars, which was praised for example by Turun Sanomat and V-magazine. Check Anteeksi.org for upcoming happenings! And read this article in Framework to get some sense of Anteeksi.

Tuomas made a piece for Mantta Art Festival with Karri Kuoppala (photo below), then went sailing with Company and Tuomo and Erich, and then build a cabin for two months
. Johanna was working on a mill she bought. Tommi was hiking in the Alps. Summer is for relaxing.

4/2006
Cool: Johanna´s Lightcarpet was spotted by Coolhunter.

School: Richmond workshop was super!

Press: Helsingin Sanomat published an article about a media centre we have been designing (check Projects -> m-cult). Viisi Tähteä magazine interviewed us about interiors.

Work: We got nice pictures of new projects Bali and Purple, we will put these up soon!
1–3/2006
Huh! We finally had the time to rebuild our site. We have added most of the projects we did in 2004-2005 on the site and will keep on adding new ones.

Latest news workwise: club "BALI" we designed for Silja Line ship running between Helsinki and Stockholm was built and we are happy about it. Here are some pictures, we will get better ones soon. Right now we are working on a jewellery shop in Helsinki and have been pitching for a couple of other things.
Lots of travelling in March: Tuomas will be giving a lecture in a series called "Objects and Methods"and a workshop in VCU in Richmond, Virginia, USA on March 6th. Come to see it if you are around! Johanna will be travelling to Senegal and Benin in March to do a urban project in Dakar.

Later in spring we have been invited with Anteeksi to participate in couple of exhibitions, for example REMIX in Fiskars in the summer of 2006.
Tommi is currently spending a lot of time in Switzerland to work at ETH Zürich as Assistant Professor for Kees
Christiaanse
in the Institute for Urban Design. He also continues with his PhD-research on the concept of 'Urban Design
Management', which is due 2007. Tommi's PhD forms an essential part of a larger research project called Decomb - Design Concepts and Management of Built Environment. The first Urban Design Management seminar 'Scope 2005' held in Helsinki just before Christmas proved to be a success!
8/2005
Hello!

We got back from summer vacation, and finished our proposal for an invited competition on prefab house kit by Ruukki, competing with ALA, Claesson-Koivisto-Rune, Koko3, Huttunen-Pakkanen-Lipasti and Plot.

Still working on the big update on this site! If you need more specific info on our recent projects at the moment please mail info@M41LH2.com
This house on the right is almost finished in Pori, but it will not be clad until next summer. Scroll down for earlier model photos to see how it will look like.
The cultural center M41LH2 / Johanna Hyrkäs designed for Villa Karo in Benin has been in active use after its completion this year, up to 5000 people have showed in the events.

Here are some pictures by Lauri Nykopp:

One of the courtyards at night...

...and local musicians, Alfas group rehearsing on the other courtyard.

.

In May we visited New York with Anteeksi, and were happy to notice that Icon-magazine had chosen our booth as their favorite in the ICFF! Nice!

And a nice trip as a whole too, greetings to all the people we met.
In New York we also said bye-bye to our long time partner Tuomas, who left to start his own office with his wife, Nene Tsuboi.

Good luck!
1–2/2005
Happy new year! Some spring projects in M41LH2 include: exhibition design for centennial exhibition of Helkama companies and another for UIAH, shop design, couple of competitions + invitation as part of Anteeksi to show at ICFF in New York in May by Metropolis -magazine.

Houses: eagerly awaiting to see the one being constructed in Pori finished; another project is Johannas steel-framed vertical one-family houses, supported by Rautaruukki, on the right.

We were thinking about making more changes on our site but due to lack of time we postponed them a bit. Here is a new picture from Villa Karo cultural center in Benin, this is one of the projects we will add when we get the update done later this spring.
12/2004
Lot of things: First our team from Anteeksi was awarded Golden Blickfang Preis in Zürich, check Neue Zürcher Zeitung in german here. Sehr schön!

Then Tuomas S. got Grafia pro gradu -prize for his thesis Helsinki®? for UIAH. In this picture Tuomas is trying to explain it.

Then current muoto -magazine includes our visions for the future of Helsinki.. And we are working for example a store concept in Moscow.

11/2004
Second Anteeksi fashion show was a success, somebody counted 200 guests. Thanks for coming! We were also invited to show on Blickfang in Zurich among other young finnish designers, you can find us there 19.11.-21.11. in the Helsinki corner.

Some appearances by M41LH2 in November: Tuomas T. will host Innovative City -seminar on 16.11., Tuomas S. was invited to speak at Armi-päivät on 26.11.
10/2004
The october update is a little late... sorry.
Some proposals are keeping us busy. We were happily surprised when we received this book by Ana G. Canizares, as they had chosen our project for the cover.

We try to add some new completed projects in the project chart on this site later this months as there has not been any additions for some time and in the meanwhile some stuff has been completed.
In case somebody did not notice 4th of October was the official "World Architecture day". To celebrate this Finnish Association of Architects organized an evening where young firms could present their work.

We were presenting our stuff along K2S, o+o architects, Jenni Reuter, Kristina Karlsson, Avanto and ALA.
09/2004
Tommi represented Finland among 22 people who took part in masterclass "Science Park Amsterdam" for young Western-European architects in Berlage Institute in Rotterdam in the end of August. The workshop proved to be very good one.
In the meanwhile rest of M41LH2 except TT who was playing with his band was with amppa and neski at Alvar Aalto design seminar "Choices". It was very inspiring to hear the lectures by for example Matali Crasset, Jasper Morrison and Inaki Abalos.

And then we went with a boat to take a sauna here.
Luckily there are also things happening workwise, our first private house is under construction on this site (scroll down for earlier model photos).

Other projects now active include a pitch for an upcoming exhibition and concept development for Silja Line.

07-08/2004

M41LH2 took some holidays in July: Tommi went walking in Spain, Tuomas sailing in Åland, Johanna surfing in Biarritz and Tuomas T. dancing and singing in Saarijarvi..

Back on work: two new club/bar/restaurant projects in design phase, we are quite excited about these, more info and images later.

On a different scale: Tommi was the concept consultant for our Anteeksi friend Antti Lassila on a competition entry for a cultural multiplex, containing two museums, a hotel and a dancehall. The entry was awarded a purchase. Congratulations!

M41LH2 work can be seen this month in two magazines: Wallpaper and Cubes. And in a new book by LOFT publications. We are very happy about this interest. Thanks!
Too bad, this project on the right was canceled ->

POL Oxygen from Australia publishes our work in their recent issue. Maja magazine from Estonia has a theme number about finnish architecture with writings by Tuomas and Tommi.

Summer tips: go to Louisiana art museum in Denmark to see the Red Dress premiere by our Anteeksi colleague Aamu Song. Book your tickets for Isea 2004 before they run out. And visit this media centre we are working on when it opens in 2006 :).

04-05/2004
Sorry no update in April... Thanks and greetings to everybody who sent in applications for work/internship, we really appreciate your interest!

M41LH2 at the moment:

Working on a scheme of converting an 19th century building into a cultural centre containing for example multipurpose gallery/exhibition/club/performance spaces...
... small summer retreat (by tommi)...
...an exhibition coming up in 2005...
...and public housing. And besides these anteeksi.org has been launched and will continue to evolve very soon.

This is a site dedicated to all the common projects done by Anteeksi, our collective. Check it out. And keep your eye on international publications, our work will be featured in couple of magazines in June, more about that later!

Still working on the design for this house.

Wow! We noticed that there was a nice mention of us in this interview, where Robert Thiemann says:

"In interior architecture, I think young architects such as Fabio Novembre (Italy), David Adjaye (England), M41LH2 (Finland), Francesc Pons (Spain), Concrete (the Netherlands), Matali Crasset (France) and Jurgen Bey (the Netherlands) are creating very interesting work. "
Darren, our trainee, made a model and these renderings of the house.
Another project at M41LH2 now is a showroom/exhibition space design for 3M, here are some sketches.

Watch this space... M41LH2 coming up with something ->

Some photos of our latest projects:

New exhibition building to cultural centre Villa Karo is almost finished finally.

This building is an addition to a finnish cultural centre operating in Benin, West Africa. The new building houses exhibition and working spaces for visiting artists and acts as a link between the cultural centre and the local community.
The outer walls are made of colored concrete, an experiment with sculptor Pertti Kukkonen.
The building has a low horizontal exhibition space framing the courtyard with the old buildings. Towards the sea there are two courtyards with different proportions and color schemes, intended for different kinds of use.

The colors in this picture are still unfinished.

This is Syöpä Nyt -exhibition in Design Museum. Syöpä Nyt is a non-profit work for the finnish cancer foundation.

Syöpä Nyt-projektin avulla syöpäjärjestöt keräävät varoja syövän vastaiseen työhön. Voit osallistua projektiin ostamalla Syöpä-tuotteita tai lahjoittamalla rahaa. Lisää tietoa / more info.

This is a project from 2002 called Kontupiste, we finally managed to get some pictures. Kontupiste is a community space in suburb of Helsinki called Kontula. Various activities are organized: people can bring their photoalbums to be scanned and added to a picture database of the suburb. The space also provides computers and courses on radio and video, plus a studio for making local programmes. Interior, designed by M41LH2/Tuomas T. was just a part in this EU-funded project in the URBAN-program.
We have continued to develop the design for this house project. The construction work will start in spring 2004. At the moment we are working on the materials.
Two projects by us were published in this book by Alejandro Bahamon..

Take a look at it in Amazon for example.
